Self-Doubt Is Lying To You—Here’s How To Silence The Lies And Reclaim Your Power

Why Self-Doubt Exists—and Why It’s Not the Enemy

“Our biggest enemy is our own self-doubt. We really can achieve extraordinary things in our lives. But we sabotage our greatness because of our fear.”—Robin Sharma.

What if the voice inside your head isn’t your worst enemy but a misunderstood guide? The relentless inner dialogue consisting of self-doubt, which questions your self-worth and disrupts your confidence, is all too familiar. It’s like an astute adversary that whispers tales of failure and inadequacy. But what if those whispers held the key to unlocking your inner strength? Before surrendering to its control, consider this: self-doubt isn’t intended to break you—it’s a challenge waiting for you to rise above it. The question is, will you accept the challenge?

Here’s a provocative idea: we cannot eliminate self-doubt more than trying to eradicate negative thoughts. Doubts are woven into our psyche during childhood as we learn to integrate into our surroundings. What starts as the voice of reason echoed through loved ones soon becomes the doubtful inner critic with time. Did you know you will have heard the word ‘NO’ repeated 50,000 times by the time you reach adulthood? In contrast, the word ‘YES’ is heard 7,000 times. How often has that inner voice told you ‘NO’ this week? What would happen if you started questioning it?

But what if that ‘NO’ you’ve heard many times has gradually become the basis for the false story that self-doubt repeats until it feels like the truth? We are notorious for fabricating inaccurate tales about ourselves, and doubt is one such story repeated through adulthood. Whilst it may be normal to entertain doubt occasionally, being at the mercy of debilitating thoughts is not conducive to a fulfilling life. If left unchecked, doubt can erode your confidence, leading to self-destructive thoughts in the long run. It slowly eats away at your self-confidence like a computer virus. By the time you notice it, self-doubt will take over like the virus on your computer and create its own internal structure. That is why self-doubt is insidious when it first takes hold.

How Self-Doubt Sabotages Your Confidence

“Willpower is the key to success. Successful people strive no matter what they feel by applying their will to overcome apathy, doubt or fear.”—Dan Millman.

So, while self-doubt can wreak havoc with our self-confidence, it’s worth repeating that it requires self-examination if it prevents you from living an enriching life. For instance, many people shy away from honoring their potential and conceal their emotions, hoping they’ll disappear from sight. Regrettably, as time passes, the buried emotions resurface in the form of illness, destructive relationships, addiction to substances, or untoward behavior.

To further illustrate this idea, in his book Spontaneous Evolution, author Bruce Lipton states that our subconscious mind controls 95% of our behavior. Our behavior is reflected in the blind decisions we make daily without a moment’s consideration. Think about how much of your daily choices are automated without conscious intent. Similarly, in his book Who’s In Charge: Free Will and The Science of The Brain, neuroscientist Michael S. Gazzaniga explores split-brain personality and highlights how our “interpreter module” in our brain constructs a narrative to make sense of our behavior. It incorporates what it recognizes while rationalizing or disregarding the rest. Therefore, the mind has its own agenda driven by biology, not to sabotage us but to conserve and protect us. However, the downside is that this protective gateway becomes destructive, creating its own viral network of negative thoughts to keep us safe rather than help us prosper.

Ways to Reclaim Your Power from Self-Doubt

“When we direct a lot of hostile energy toward the inner critic, we enter into a losing battle.”—Sharon Salzberg.

So, while the mind has its own protective mechanism to safeguard our interests, we remain in control of how we respond to what is happening. For instance, countless books espouse ways to overcome self-doubt. Most dismissively apply the term conquering doubt, likening it to overcoming a setback. However, self-doubt is an inherent aspect of our human nature, which arises from insecurities and a fear of failure. Overcoming self-doubt requires taking affirmative action while being attentive to the inner critic. That is, you take action despite the doubt.

Here are a few steps to quiet the inner critic and move forward with confidence:

1. Identify Your Doubt Triggers:

Reflect on situations that trigger self-doubt. Is it when speaking in public, making important decisions, or pursuing new goals? Awareness is the first step to managing self-doubt.

2. Challenge the Stories You Tell Yourself:

When self-doubt arises, ask yourself: “Is this belief true?” Look for evidence that contradicts the doubt and reframe the narrative. This is based on the work of Byron Katie The Work, which helps us examine our doubts with openness and curiosity.

3. Start Small and Take Action:

Pick one small step to challenge your doubt. For example, if you’re afraid to share an idea with your work colleagues, start by speaking up in a smaller setting. Each success builds self-confidence.

4. Use Positive Affirmations or Self-Talk:

Counteract the negative voice with affirmations such as “I am capable” or “I have overcome challenges before.” Repetition can help rewire your inner dialogue over time.

5. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection:

Focus on progress instead of on attaining perfection. Small victories gradually weaken doubt’s grip over time.

Contemplate one area in your life where self-doubt may be holding you back. What is one small action you could take today to prove that voice wrong? Maybe it involves speaking up in a meeting at work, trying something new, or allowing yourself to fail and being okay with it. One small step can diminish the inner critic’s grip on your confidence.

To highlight this idea of taking action in the face of your doubts, in a recent documentary highlighting the sport of accelerated free falling, the adventurer was asked by a reporter if he felt fear before jumping. He reassured him that fear was present during every jump and served to remind him of the inherent dangers associated with the sport. He managed the fear by reducing its volume, so it didn’t overwhelm him. Take a moment to consider the spectrum of doubt in your life. How do you deal with self-doubt when it emerges? To overcome self-doubt, consider venturing beyond your comfort zone and trying new things often. Each time we meet a minor victory, we gain confidence, thus weakening self-doubt.

Your inner critic isn’t a roadblock but a speed bump reminding you to slow down, review, and move forward with purpose and intent. Self-doubt, if left unchecked, can paralyze your growth. But when it is embraced with curiosity and self-compassion, it becomes a powerful tool for transformation. Knowing this, what small step can you take today to quiet your inner critic and move forward with confidence? Start small: identify one area where doubt holds you back, and take a step outside your comfort zone today. Whether it’s speaking up, trying something new, or forgiving yourself for past failures, each step you take erodes self-doubt’s power. Remember, the journey to inner peace isn’t about silencing doubt—it’s about learning to move forward despite it. The path to a fulfilling life begins now. Will you take the first step?
